Still pretty much in stasis since my last update but I’ve had some insights. I’ve been playing the 1200-rated bots every day and without the assists, they always outsmart me and I always get checkmated. Then a couple of weeks back I started playing the 1000-rated bots again and found defeating them murderously easy. And I drew parallels between that and playing G5 pieces on classical guitar and G7 pieces. Sure, I can say I can “play” G7 pieces but the truth of it is that I spent two years working on BWV1007 without the kind of musical fluency required because I’m basically between G5-G6. On a bad day, I feel I am still G4. Likewise, I got as far as I could advance — which is, with the bots between a rapid rating of 900-1100. But 1200 is beyond me. What’s the way forward? Well, I’d need to resubscribe to Dr. Wolf, and read up those chess strategy books. I should probably play some real players but I’m scared to scupper my rapid/bullet/blitz ratings even more. My weakness has always been not just strategy but my offense. I’ve always been good at putting up a good defense but maybe lack the killer instincts for a really well-positioned checkmate. Metaphor for life? Anyway, I’m too busy/tired right now to want to do more than this. No pressure to it — no one is expecting me to be a chess killah and I have no one to play with. Haha. THANK GOD. Last thing I need is more pressure. When I retire I fully intend to join chess clubs and take part in chess matches though!
